What patients should know

Phentermine is FDA approved for short-term use as an adjunct to diet, exercise and behavioral change. Continued clinical strategy should be individualized and should not be confused with the chronic-weight-management approval of Qsymia. W8MD monitors response, pulse, blood pressure, sleep and misuse risk.

Approval status and medication safety

FDA approval applies to a specific product, population, indication, dose and formulation. A medicine approved for type 2 diabetes is not automatically approved for obesity, even when the active ingredient is shared. Off-label prescribing can be medically appropriate but must be identified as off label. Compounded drugs are not FDA approved, and investigational products should be obtained only through legitimate clinical trials.

GLP-1–based treatment commonly causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal discomfort or reflux. Product-specific labeling may include warnings related to thyroid C-cell tumors, gallbladder disease, pancreatitis, kidney injury from dehydration, severe gastrointestinal disease, hypoglycemia with certain diabetes medicines and pregnancy. W8MD reviews the current prescribing information rather than applying one warning list to every medicine.

Urgent symptoms: Seek prompt medical assessment for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, fainting, confusion, allergic symptoms or signs of significant dehydration.

Affordable GLP-1 pathways

Pathway Starting price Qualification
Semaglutide-based From $29.99/week With qualifying insured visits; self-pay pathways from $59.99/week.
Tirzepatide-based From $45/week With qualifying insured visits; self-pay pathways from $69.99/week.

Eligibility, product, dose, pharmacy, supplies, visits, insurance and availability affect actual cost. Compounded drugs are not FDA approved or generic versions of approved brands. Request a complete written estimate.
