Home sleep-apnea testing

A home sleep-apnea test can help diagnose obstructive sleep apnea in appropriately selected adults. It is not a general test for every sleep disorder, and a negative or technically inadequate result may require additional evaluation.

What a sleep evaluation considers

Symptoms

Snoring, witnessed pauses, gasping, insomnia, morning headaches, unrefreshing sleep and daytime sleepiness.

Health context

Weight, blood pressure, heart or lung disease, medications, alcohol, nasal symptoms, work schedule and driving risk.

Testing choice

Whether home sleep-apnea testing, laboratory study, prior-record review or another evaluation is most appropriate.

Treatment is individualized

Depending on the diagnosis, care may involve CPAP or APAP, selected bilevel therapy, mask and humidification support, oral-appliance referral, positional measures, weight management or specialist referral. Weight loss can complement sleep-apnea treatment, but patients should not stop PAP without reassessment.
