Home Sleep Apnea Test vs Lab Sleep Study Philadelphia at W8MD Philadelphia

Choosing the appropriate sleep study

Home testing is convenient for selected adults with suspected obstructive sleep apnea. Laboratory polysomnography records more signals and may be preferred when other sleep disorders or complicating medical conditions are suspected.

What a sleep evaluation considers

Symptoms

Snoring, witnessed pauses, gasping, insomnia, morning headaches, unrefreshing sleep and daytime sleepiness.

Health context

Weight, blood pressure, heart or lung disease, medications, alcohol, nasal symptoms, work schedule and driving risk.

Testing choice

Whether home sleep-apnea testing, laboratory study, prior-record review or another evaluation is most appropriate.

Treatment is individualized

Depending on the diagnosis, care may involve CPAP or APAP, selected bilevel therapy, mask and humidification support, oral-appliance referral, positional measures, weight management or specialist referral. Weight loss can complement sleep-apnea treatment, but patients should not stop PAP without reassessment.

Safety: Do not drive when dangerously sleepy. New chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, neurologic symptoms or another emergency requires urgent care or 911—not a website form.
